Briare: a dual reputation
Briare is known firstly for its canal aqueduct, built in part by the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel. The structure, unlike any other, is the longest metal canal aqueduct in France and spans a distance of more than 660 metres across the Loire. Then there are the enamels. Briare is also famous for its brilliantly coloured mosaics which have earned it the nickname of the City of Pearls. Visitors are spoilt for choice between a boat trip or a visit to the Museum of Mosaics and Enamels!
