Using minimalist equipment (three synthesizers, an organ and an effects pedal), Pierre Malle improvises musical moments inspired by the pioneers of 1970s electronic music. Born in sound research laboratories and initially reserved for an initiated public, it was democratized with the Berlin trio Tangerine Dream (Phaedra, 1974), and its compatriots Klaus Schulze (Timewind, 1975) and Manuel Göttsching (New Age of Earth, 1976), to become a veritable stylistic and aesthetic movement, the Berlin School. These German milestones undoubtedly contributed greatly to the international successes of France’s Jean-Michel Jarre (Oxygène, 1976) and Greece’s Vangelis Papathanassiou (Spiral, 1977). L’Âme des machines is a tribute to these explorers of sound synthesis.
