Folding.
Taking a sheet of paper and making the first fold is like the promise of a new world.
Sometimes I know exactly what it will look like, and other times, it’s the paper taking shape that surprises me.
The fold has a poetic quality to it: it makes fragile matter solid.
The fold makes it stand upright, unfolds space, unfolds space.
The fold also captures time. Paper and the movement of hands become palpable, observable time.
When you think about it, it’s just a piece of paper, nothing else.
It’s this simplicity, this bareness, that I like to encounter when I pass my hands, in repeated, precise gestures, through the fibers of the paper.
This practice is linked to my work as a composer and musician.
