Justice under the Ancien Régime has a bad reputation. But how did the ordinary courts actually function in Touraine at the end of the 18th century? During his talk, Fabrice Mauclair will attempt to answer this question by looking at the locations, personnel and activities of the justice system at the time. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of local archives, he will present a highly accurate picture of justice in the past, far removed from the usual stereotypes and prejudices.
Fabrice Mauclair is a historian and teacher at the Lycée Descartes in Tours. He is the author of a dozen books devoted in particular to justice and crime at the end of the Ancien Régime.
