The Canal Latéral à la Loire follows the course of the Loire to Digoin in Saône-et-Loire. The project for the construction of the canal was submitted on 14 August 1822, and the work was carried out from 1827 to 1838. It crosses the Loire twice, at Briare and Digoin, and the Allier at Guetin.
